“Moderate” Crucial for Women’s Exercise
A team of researchers lead by Steriani Elavsky at Penn State University has found that women between the ages of 40 and 60 respond better to moderate rather than vigorous exercise. According to Elavsky, the group of women who exercised moderately were two-times more likely to feel energized, confident and willing to continue exercising in the future. Elavsky notes that middle-aged women are one of the least-active groups when it comes to exercise and are a particularly important group to target with successful exercise routines and tips to prevent exercise burn-out. The study defines moderate level workouts as activities “that would allow you to talk in short sentences while you are doing them, but would not allow you to sing.” Some examples of moderate exercises are brisk walking, gardening, dancing, and bicycling.
