Each year for the past 8 years, the Prevent Cancer Foundation has presented Laurels awards to innovators and leaders in the fight against cancer. This event began in 2003 as a means of both recognizing and celebrating leaders in cancer prevention. The laurel was chosen because it is an ancient Roman symbol of tribute, honor, victory, merit, and reward. The 2nd Annual Prevent Cancer Foundation 5K held last Saturday, September 25, had lots of high points and some very poignant moments as well. Raising nearly $60,000 (with donations still coming in!) in support of cancer prevention and early detection, the 5K received overwhelming praise from participants, volunteers, and supporters. The formation of teams is new to the Prevent Cancer Foundation 5K and one of the teams formed this year is “Team Alan” in memory of Alan Matz, a retired senior chief in the Navy and former NASA engineer.
