Scientists at the University of Tennessee announced last week that advancements have been made in the field of cancer fighting laser technology. A team of biomedical engineers and physicists collaborated to create a laser that sends out ultra short pulses of light to specifically target a small region of cells. The pulses, sent at approximately every quadrillionth of a second, are precise enough to destroy small tumor tissues.

Previous treatments have been limited since laser radiation typically covers a large range and also causes damage in healthy tissue surrounding the cancer. The use of short-range laser technology also expands the treatment available for cancers that cannot be removed surgically, such as certain brain tumors. Called the “femto-second laser” by its creators, the University of Tennessee and supporting institutions are seeking to immediately commercialize the use of this technology for clinical use.
